As long as we're on the subject, I have long wondered about the origion of the
welded version of the A1A truck that the Silver Charger uses.

I had originally thought that it was a prototype truck that EMC had before they
committed to the first cast production versions used under the B&O EA
and the ATSF E1. I also wondered what, if anything, it might have been tested
under before being cleared for use. I had even thought that maybe the 511/512
boxcabs might have been used to test the truck but they were in service under
lease to the CB&Q and ATSF at the time it was built.

I exchanged emails with Preston Cook, the former EMD employee who has been
writing the excellent articles about the early days of EMC in RMC and RailFan,
and it is his opinion that the truck was built specifically for the 9908. EMC
was trying to get better airflow to the traction motors and the truck was built
to try a different
truck bolster to deliver the air.

The fabricated truck is a little different looking than the cast version so a
really accurate Silver Charger model would have different sideframes than the
standard E6. IIRC
the HO LifeLike E truck is a little lighter in execution than others so might
not be a bad fill-in until somebody tackles an accurate welded version.

Of course, a resin body 9908 will allow somebody to do the E5s as the CB&Q
wanted to do them.... with a shovelnose!....the 9908 being basically half of an
E5 grafted to a Budd baggage car.
