It was actually a private party in Kansas City who sold both an ex-DZ/TC set
and an ex-TCZ/NZ Train of the Gods to Saudi Arabia. The DZ set was sold to a
party in Denver in 1969 and sat there for a number of years until it was sold
to the Kansas City party, whereupon the Denver party purchased the Train of the
Gods. In the mid 70's, the Train of the Gods was also sold to the Kansas City
party who then sold it to Saudi Arabia.

The tragedy was that neither trainset lasted more than 6 months in Arabian
service until the sand got to them and rendered them inoperable.

I think you are missing the point. The cars were sold and shipped overseas when
they became surplus by the formation of Amtrak. The Saudis, just like Mexico
and Korea, have always been interested in usable equipment (a N&W tavern -
lounge observation has been there for decades) and the railroads took what they
could get. Its not that historical cars are being shipped by museums and
historical organizations... the dasterdly deed was done by the railroads
themselves, but then, they can only afford to donate so much before they have
to stop looking at tax credits and start getting back to what they are suppose
to do, making money for their stock holders.
