I was in the Kansas City Union Station today to see my wife off on the
Southwest Chief. While there, I stopped to look at several of the many
displays that are there for public viewing. In one case, I noted an
undated photo of what appears to be the California Zephyr departing
westbound (north bound) with a set of the 9960 series F3s as power. The
portion of the train consist that can be seen includes the double door
Budd baggage car, a number of Budd coaches or sleeper cars and a vista
dome. The rest of the train is hidden by the station structure.
Obviously, the CZ did not normally travel to or through KC. My
question: does this photo depict the CZ when it may have been on
display at various Q towns prior to entering scheduled service or is
this a rerouted CZ that may be detouring due to a wreck or other track
disruption on on its normal route? With the F3s up front, it had to be
takken within the first several years of service. I wish I had access
to the photo so I could post it.
