Another little torment which switchmen would do to engineers in steam days
was to "saw" a switch.
That involved: After a cut was pulled out of a yard track and the engineer
had "horsed her over" to go back from whence he came, the switchmen would
give him a sign that he needed to go a bit more the direction he had been
going...thus causing him to "horse her over" again...
That was no problem with a diesel, but in steam days with the old Johnson
Bar, the engineer had to get down in the deck and move the lever from forward
to reverse or vice versa...A few times of that was lots of extra labor...
