Some time ago, I queried BRHSlist regarding the phase of 9913, since she was
a separate EMD order between the two major blocks (9909; 9910-9912AB;
9950AB;9980AB - February & March 1940; 9914-9915AB - June 1941. 9913 was
delivered in October 1940.
There were distinct exterior differences between the first block order and
the second block order, primarily in pilot and roof detail, so I referred to
them as Phase 1 and Phase 2. Someone on the list had a photo of 9913 and
reported her as a Phase 2.
I belatedly added Mike Spoor's "CB&Q In Color Vol. I" to my library, and
find there are two photos of 9913 pp 63 & 115. Roof details are difficult
to identify in low-angle shots, but luckily the photo on p 63 (taken in
1953) shows 9913 leading an unidentified E-7. Comparison of the two roofs
shows that, although 9913 has the Ph 2 pilot details, it retains the Phase 1
A unit roof radiators - these consisted of rectangular boxes with adjustable
slats arranged crosswise to the roof, rather than the fins arranged
lengthwise to the roof. Luckily, I discovered this before finishing my P2K
E-6 to E-5 kitbash.
I'm afraid Dennis Popish (see Contest Photos section with your latest
Zephyr) will not be too pleased by this news . . . sorry, Dennis!
