[CBQ] Re: Double Heading Steam

Did The CBQ ever use back up hoses? 
We had them in selected locations on the CNW for Back up movements when 
visiblity was impaired. I use to see them hanging on poles on the yard leads. A 
Back up Hose was only about 6-8'of extra air hose with a value on one end & 
glad hand on the other. The Trainman riding the shove could control the train 
brakes from the side ladder and stop as he near the opposite clearance thus 
never putting himself in danger of falling & running himself over. 
I never used one. Maybe they where as well maintained as the air whistles on 
the crummies. Did the Q have valves with whistle attached on the caboose 
platforms to control back up movement?

I never doubled head any steam engines but have doublehead & worked numerous 
helpers. The second engr cuts out control of trainline brakes but always has 
control of his own eng brakes & can place train into emergency if need.
