For you modelers out there, Mike Spoor recommended to me many years ago to use Highball brand ballast (it's real rock) with the light gray color being a good match for the slag ballast. I've used it
Lenny, The holes were probably less than 1/2 in. in dia., so in HO scale, they wouldn't be visible to the naked eye. I'm really after the overall colors and texture from a bird's eye view. Nelson Nel

The steel mill slag ballast I remember being loaded into scores of CB&Q Ballast hoppers at Illinois Slag and Ballast, was a very light gray (almost white) and extremely porous. This was in 1962-1967
The Chicago, West Pullman and Southern serviced IS&B. The CWP was at the south end of the Rock's wye at 95th. St. I never saw any Q hopper movements north up the Rock's wye during day light. Perhaps
Rock Island did not handle Q hoppers for slag loading. Most likely via BRC. Dick Haave __._,_.___ Posted by: therrboomer@yahoo.com Visit Your Group Yahoo! Groups • Privacy • Unsubscribe &bu
