This photo was taken on a Monday, but the day before a holiday. By the time of year and sun angle, I'm guessing mid-afternoon, probably before the dinkie parade started. One could speculate that the train arrived in Chicago with three cars and 14th St. added two, perhaps for anticipated extra riders leaving work early for the holiday, perhaps because that train had enough riders every day to justify five cars, or perhaps because when it got to Aurora* it would flip back and either need five for that run or need them for its next outbound trip. I also note that the second car is not the Q design, but one
ordered by the RTA some time later than 1970 (with
shallower fluting, not flat sided as mentioned in the comments),
and that the rear three cars are all BN cars with no letter
boards. *I'm having to remind myself that at the time,
they still used the old Aurora depot and that some trains were
switched and stored there while others went down the incline to
what is now called the Hill Yard. I never saw any of this action
on weekdays myself. -- David Streeter On 12/14/2022 8:27 PM, spsalso via

Then the train I'm seeing, leaving downtown, will leave the rear half of his train "out there"? Perhaps it's the last train of the rush, and the section that's left overnight will be picked up by a short train in the morning, recreating the consist in the photo, but going backwards. _._,_._,_ Groups.io Links: You receive all messages sent to this group.
