I worked the Dinkies and a few yard jobs so allow me to add what the operating practice was. The only switching, breaking apart or combining trains was done at Aurora or 14th st yard. There were any number of different moves to change train consists around to meet the next rush hour or off period demand.

Then the train I'm seeing, leaving downtown, will leave the rear half of his train "out there"? Perhaps it's the last train of the rush, and the section that's left overnight will be picked up by a short train in the morning, recreating the consist in the photo, but going backwards.
If I've got my directions right, that is.
