As Metra ordered new bilevel cars through the years after the BN merger including new cab cars the older Q cab cars became obsolete and were utilized anywhere within a consist functioning as straight passenger car versions. Eventually BN removed the cab controls and blanked out the engineer/fireman windows and sealed the cab access doors. Metra ordered quite a few new cars and opted to have the contracted extra cab cars built first to save money by having the extra cost control cars built first, avoiding price increases that could have occurred through the length of the car production contracts. This resulted in new cab cars being utilized anywhere, including multiple cab cars within a commuter consist until the cab control cars were needed to be placed into service as the actual consist control cars. The time frame for this was unknown and was on an “as needed” basis. So witnessing cab control cars, even multiple cars in commuter consists was an everyday occurrence for potentially years.

The Q only had 6 cab cars, so they couldn't. It is my understanding this was done in later years to facilitate taking cars off to have shorter midday trains without having to switch in a cab car.

I've just seen some overhead photos of the BN version of these trains where there's a cab car also included "mid-train". In fact, the trains could be pretty easily produced by buying both Rapido sets--has a certain appeal to me. Here's the best example I found: https://www.railpictures.net/photo/383282/You can see the horns on the middle car and the rear one. Did the Q do this, also? Why was it done? Ed Edward Sutorik
