Leo,

Thanks for the clarification.  What you are saying, especially regarding labor, agreements, and cost confirms what I felt had to be correct.  As for the Oregon Turn, I've been told by several people that they would work all the towns westbound with pick ups and set outs up to Oregon, but as you say, they did no work on the eastbound trip.

From a labor agreement standpoint the Oregon-Mt Morris job was posted as such therefore for it to leave those limits would have resulted in extra payments. Or the job would need to be “advertised”(rebid) with new limits. Then there would have been the issue of running backwards, wyeing ,likely overtime, etc. so running anywhere for coal would have been impractical.

According to ETTs The Oregon Turn was a new job in 1949. Prior to that the local work was handled by a Eola based wayfreight working to Savanna M-W-F and returning T-Th-Sat.
It’s been my understanding that the Oregon Turn was created to cover the eastbound loads out of Kable after the passenger train that previously picked them up was taken off.

In reviewing ETTs I'm unclear as to what passenger run that was?

As to the sand plant I don’t recall anyone talking about the Oregon Turn switching it. Besides once they arrived at Oregon getting back to Aurora with Kable loads was priority one.

In the BN era the Oregon-Mt Morris job switched the sand plant as it was considered in Oregon. In the 50s the sand plant was much smaller than in the 70s and beyond.

Leo Phillipp
