Doug:

Nos. 45 & 52 were still listed in an April 1954 Official Guide I have, but as overnight trains with coaches only.  No. 45 left Chicago at 8:30 PM daily except Saturday, arriving in Minneapolis at 9:50 AM daily except Sunday.  No. 52 left Minneapolis at 6:30 PM daily except Saturday, arriving in Chicago at 9:05 AM daily except Sunday.  No. 52 made a meal stop in Savanna at 5:20 AM.

Is there a chance the eastbound passenger train picking up at Oregon be # 52 (the eastbound all-day local from the Twin Cities to Chicago)?  I don’t know when the all-day locals were removed.  I have only passenger TT’s and I have a big gap from 1948 (45 and 52 are listed) to 1964 (they are not listed).

I gather 45 and 52 were originally decent day trains - until the Twin City Zephyrs showed up.

The main reason I am asking is my love of 45 and 52.   I rode 45 from Chicago to St. Paul as a kid in the late 40’s.  It made lots of stops and featured a large number of head-end cars.  In fact there was just one coach on the day I rode it with my parents.   That day it was pulled by a Hudson and I was thrilled - already steamers were disappearing and of course we all love the iconic Hudsons.  At one point most of the crew and the few passengers got off and had lunch in the station but I can’t remember which station that was.  Somehow that whole experience bonded me to those trains.

We traveled as pass passengers since my dad worked for the PFE, but somehow my dad managed to get us a ride back on a TC Zephyr.  I was not allowed to leave the coach (a flat top).  It did have internal lights at the front of the coach that told us what the signal lights were that the train was approaching and we could watch them change.  That was interesting but the whole experience was just not as “cool” as the all-day local for this eight-or-nine-year-old.
