Group – the attachment is the side view of an XA-13-A box car in the new “Burlington” paint scheme. This snipped out of CBQ Drawing #46267 in the BRHS Archives. I’m not sure any of these cars were ever painted in this manner, as I don’t think they remained on the roster much after the 1958 drawing release date. But this is an example of how some of the older cars were to be painted in the “new” scheme. Color of the car body on the drawing is specified as “Pittsburgh Plate Glass Co. Carhide Synthetic Red Steel Freight Car Paint #UC-33202”. Trucks and underbody were to be a PPG Black and all lettering was a PPG White. The herald shown in the upper left corner was to be painted per drawing #91610, which I don’t think we have in the Archives. Don’t have a color chip for Synthetic Red Steel Freight Car Paint and Google doesn’t either. I am pretty sure from the description that the car was supposed to be painted in a traditional freight car red and not Chinese red. Hol’s posted photos show that the outside braced cars done in the new scheme were in a freight car red. Note the different location of the lareg Burlington lettering.
Just for the record, here's how the single-sheathed 40-foot boxcars were painted during the Chinese red era. Unfortunately, in this black-and-white view it's impossible to be certain that the car is mineral red and not Chinese red.. The 50-foot single-sheathed boxes were also kept in mineral red but had room for the large Burlington lettering on their sides. There are a good many color shots of the 50-footers, all in mineral red.
Thanks for the responses so far. I hadn’t heard of Dawn Yard and could find no reference to it but I’ve never been to Kansas City – and I’m unlikely to ever get there – so I accepted what the seller said at face value. I see that he has added an enlargement of the body of the box car following Hol’s contact with him, although I don’t think it adds a great deal. Colour shift has caught me out before but the other reds appeared about right so I discounted it.
I like the idea of a sand storage car painted for the occasion, unless more information comes to hand. The paint appears to be very bright, brighter than the other units, suggesting that the paint job was recent.
Next job is to find something on the 50th Anniversary celebrations to see just what took place and where. Rupert Gamlen Auckland NZ
