IIRC the Q owned stock pens primarily used for feed, water, and rest were Alliance, Lincoln, Galesburg and Montgomery.  When I first started at the Q one of my duties was to write a monthly report on livestock handled at each of the above locations.  I wondered why the Sales Department did this at the time and I still wonder about it.  The Q did have a livestock sales group with representatives at key locations on the railroad.  It was headquartered out of Omaha (that does make sense).

I think Doug has given you as good an answer as you will find. I haven’t read the article, merely knew where to find it, having looked at another volume a couple of days ago.

If you go to https://catalog.hathitrust.org/Record/000499248 you can look at other volumes between 1891 and 1923. For example, there is a description and diagram of a cinder pit at https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=mdp.39015003725721;view=1up;seq=213 and information about split rails and drawbridge locks at https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=mdp.39015003725721;view=1up;seq=643

Rupert and Doug:

Correct me if I am wrong but what I get from the report is that provisions for wetting, watering and feeding stock was mainly on the mainline and not on the branch lines.
