Maybe this can help you understand why I come up with some of the questions that I ask.

I have attached a copy of a picture taken at my Great Grandfather's farm in 1893. The occasion is to celebrate the completion of the frame house.

In the left side of the photo you can see the original sod house he built when he settled the land. You can also see where he added on as the family grew.

These are the kind of farm people that the railroad supported and who in turn supported the railroad.

His descendants STILL live on and farm that same land (and more) that Great Granddad homesteaded in 1882.

Thank you for all of the great information. My knowledge of all of this comes second or third hand. I am a city boy (yea I'm now retired) born and raised. My mom was a city girl. Dad was a country boy. All of his Grandparents homesteaded in Smith County Kansas in the 1880's. His parents grew up on farms there. My knowledge comes from family stories and memoirs that I have read. Therefore there are big gaps in my knowledge.

I love the way the members of this group are able to educate and fill in all of these gaps.

I want to say a big thank you to the group and all of it's members you are a resource to be treasured.

IIRC the Q owned stock pens primarily used for feed, water, and rest were Alliance, Lincoln, Galesburg and Montgomery.  When I first started at the Q one of my duties was to write a monthly report on livestock handled at each of the above locations.  I wondered why the Sales Department did this at the time and I still wonder about it.  The Q did have a livestock sales group with representatives at key locations on the railroad.  It was headquartered out of Omaha (that does make sense).

I think Doug has given you as good an answer as you will find. I haven’t read the article, merely knew where to find it, having looked at another volume a couple of days ago.

If you go to https://catalog.hathitrust.org/Record/000499248 you can look at other volumes between 1891 and 1923. For example, there is a description and diagram of a cinder pit at https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=mdp.39015003725721;view=1up;seq=213 and information about split rails and drawbridge locks at https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=mdp.39015003725721;view=1up;seq=643

Rupert and Doug:

Correct me if I am wrong but what I get from the report is that provisions for wetting, watering and feeding stock was mainly on the mainline and not on the branch lines.
