Re. the “D’ marking on 59075 and not on 50475.

When the Burlington reorganised the numbering of freight cars in 1903 (coinciding with the assimilation of freight cars owned by the various subsidiaries into a single numbering system) the 50000-59999 number group was allocated to double deck stock cars and the 60000-69999 was for single deck cars. This numbering protocol applied to stock cars up to and including the SM-14’s which were built in 1917-1919. The next group, SM-15 built in 1920, was numbered 59500-59999 even though these were single deck cars. All future stock cars were numbered in the 5xxxx range including the Mather lease cars.

Getting back to the two cars in question, 50475 was a SM-11 (50360-50609) built in 1911 so it was automatically a double deck car. All of the cars of this class were off the roster by 1928. 59075 was a single deck SM-16 (58000-59499) built in 1924 which lasted until BN. At some stage, some single deck cars were fitted with an upper deck. I don’t know if it occurred at the same time but a “D” was added either above the number or after it to easily identify those cars with a double deck.

From 1940 onwards, the ORER had a foot note for cars in classes SM-15 to SM-19 inclusive stating that these cars “may be furnished equipped with a temporary upper deck on application to agent. In such cases, agent will make notation on livestock contract and way bill covering the shipment handled in car showing that car is equipped with temporary upper deck”. By this date, all the original double deck 5xxxx cars had been retired.

The photo can be dated to between 1924 when 59075 was built and 1928 when there were no more SM-11’s on the roster.

In passing, the SM-11’s together with the SM-12’s and -13’s, were built from timber recovered from box cars being scrapped at Aurora – details in a future Bulletin article.

The first image shows Wyoming sheep being loaded into double deck stock car No. 59075D, the "D" meaning double deck.  Double deck stock car No. 50475 at right has already been loaded. For whatever reason, this car doesn't have the "D" next to its number.
