Pete - I've attached an undated image of No. 954.  It's unidentified as to location, but I'm almost positive it was taken at Wymore, NE, with the timber coal chute in the background.  Comparing the earlier image of it on the turntable at Deadwood, there's very little change in the 4-6-0's appearance over the years, except for being equipped with a coal tender.  Also, noting MSW's Email about the double sand domes on some 4-6-0's for branch line or switching service, looks like No. 954 had escaped this modification.  Originally constructed in 1900 by Rogers as a Class H-4 2-6-0 type No. 1244 and rebuilt at Aurora in November 1908 into a Class K-10 4-6-0 type, No. 954 lived a long life on the Q and wasn't retired until April 1954. Anyway, No. 954  lasted long enough for you to have your picture taken with her at Tecumseh, NE.  If you could scan and post that picture, I'd sure like to see it. Merry Christmas - Louis

Louis..954 was definitely a coal burner at Tecumseh, NE in August 53.  In an "outstanding photo" with me standing with her you can see the Tecumseh Coal chute, from which her breakfast had been hand shoveled into the tender by the hostler to sustain her for the trip..to Nebraska City.

Pete - I've got a couple of images of No. 954 in service on the Wymore Division in Nebraska. But, I've attached a really more interesting photograph of the 4-6-0 early in its career as an oil-burner in the Black Hills. The undated view shows it riding the turntable at Deadwood, SD.  Note the tender fitted with an oil bunker. As it's been discussed some time earlier, some locomotives on the Q were on-and-off-again coal or oil burners as the economic or environmental need arose. I still plan on getting one of your DVDs showing Lines West steam and early diesel power.  Merry Christmas - Louis

Louis..Thanks...NOW you need to get my Video Memories DVD which includes movies of 953's SISTER...954 switching at Tecumseh, NE in August 1953 on her penultimate trip prior to being taken out of service.

Pete - For you, here attached is an image of No. 953 taken 13 years later and much closer to you there in Lincoln, NE. It shows the 4-6-0 riding the branch line turntable at Centerville, IA.  The image is dated June 1, 1952. By then, No. 953 had been equipped with a different style tender (possibly off a retired Class H-4 2-6-0 type) and a smaller turbo-generator. Otherwise, the locomotive looks unchanged. This may be the last photograph taken of No. 953 as it was sold for scrap in February 1954. The Class K 4-6-0's were well respected branch line power in their sunset years and could be found on both Lines East and West up until dieselization during the mid-1950s. Merry Christmas - Louis

Louis...All our GREAT MINDS run along the same track.  Pun intended...I had already written my thought before I read your response...I did forget that there was a "like connection" on the St. Joe Division between Atchison KS and ARmour MO between ST. Joe and KC.  There may have been another like that over to Leavenworth as well.

Ted - I have no idea what lettering if any was painted on the other end of the freight house.  Perhaps, fellow Group member Gerald Edgar will know.  Or, have an idea where you could find out.  I think it's safe to say the No. 953 handled both the switching chores in Dubuque and powered the local over the Mississippi River Bridge to East Dubuque and back. I've attached an image dated 1939 showing the 4-6-0 exiting the joint IC-CB&Q tunnel at East Dubuque.  I do not know if the local included a coach at that time for passengers connecting with Q mainline passenger trains, but maybe Gerald will know.  Gerald's our resident expert on the LaCrosse Division and old Chicago Burlington & Northern. Good luck with your modeling project. Merry Christmas - Louis

Hi Louis,

thanks for the photo.  Wonder what lettering was on the other end of the freight house?

Wonder was the 953 the Q's local switch engine?  Or did they still have a passenger connection across the river to the mainline?

Ted

Ted - Attached is an undated image of CB&Q Class K-10 No. 953 posed at Dubuque, IA, with the brick freight house in the background. Note "Freight House" and the Burlington logo painted on the building. No. 953 was assigned power at Dubuque during the late 1930s. Merry Christmas - Louis
