Pete - For you, here attached is an image of No. 953 taken 13 years later and much closer to you there in Lincoln, NE. It shows the 4-6-0 riding the branch line turntable at Centerville, IA.  The image is dated June 1, 1952. By then, No. 953 had been equipped with a different style tender (possibly off a retired Class H-4 2-6-0 type) and a smaller turbo-generator. Otherwise, the locomotive looks unchanged. This may be the last photograph taken of No. 953 as it was sold for scrap in February 1954. The Class K 4-6-0's were well respected branch line power in their sunset years and could be found on both Lines East and West up until dieselization during the mid-1950s. Merry Christmas - Louis

Louis...All our GREAT MINDS run along the same track.  Pun intended...I had already written my thought before I read your response...I did forget that there was a "like connection" on the St. Joe Division between Atchison KS and ARmour MO between ST. Joe and KC.  There may have been another like that over to Leavenworth as well.

Ted - I have no idea what lettering if any was painted on the other end of the freight house.  Perhaps, fellow Group member Gerald Edgar will know.  Or, have an idea where you could find out.  I think it's safe to say the No. 953 handled both the switching chores in Dubuque and powered the local over the Mississippi River Bridge to East Dubuque and back. I've attached an image dated 1939 showing the 4-6-0 exiting the joint IC-CB&Q tunnel at East Dubuque.  I do not know if the local included a coach at that time for passengers connecting with Q mainline passenger trains, but maybe Gerald will know.  Gerald's our resident expert on the LaCrosse Division and old Chicago Burlington & Northern. Good luck with your modeling project. Merry Christmas - Louis

Hi Louis,

thanks for the photo.  Wonder what lettering was on the other end of the freight house?

Wonder was the 953 the Q's local switch engine?  Or did they still have a passenger connection across the river to the mainline?

Ted

Ted - Attached is an undated image of CB&Q Class K-10 No. 953 posed at Dubuque, IA, with the brick freight house in the background. Note "Freight House" and the Burlington logo painted on the building. No. 953 was assigned power at Dubuque during the late 1930s. Merry Christmas - Louis
