Charlie - In a quick check of my Class O-4 images, it looks like the 5506 got the same "flat" smoke box front treatment.  In this fireman's side color view, you can see that the smoke box front is flat, not dished out. 5506 is shown switching at Fort Collins, CO, in 1956. 5506 later became C&S 805 and was retired in December 1960. So, for the modelers in our Group, thanks to Charlie's sharp eyes, it appears there was a variation in O-4 smoke box fronts...… Thinking about this matter, if all that was replaced was just the front door and not the entire front of the smoke box, then it wouldn't been a heavy repair and probably could've been easily done by a Lines West roundhouse gang.  Best Regards - Louis

Charlie - You have SHARP eyes!  I can only speculate that 5502 ended-up with a flat smoke box front from being either wrecked or the original USRA dished front had badly corroded.  I'll have to check my other O-4 images both Q and C&S to see if other such locomotives were so equipped during their service lives. Since replacing the smoke box front was a heavy repair, my guess is that 5502 had been involved sometime in either a head-on or rear end collision. I think corrosion is unlikely since 5502 was an oil burner. Thanks - Louis

Louis
Thanks for posting these photos!
I noticed that the 5502 has a new standard Q flat bsmokebox front replacing the dished USRA as built one!

Pat, Ken, John and Group - The handsome Class O-4 5500's during their long and productive service lives were Lines West power. Prior to their retirement in the early-to-mid 1950s, they could be found in roundhouses at Lincoln, Alliance, Hastings, Denver and Casper.  In fact, the 5500's were the major freight power on the Casper (WY) Division until dieselization. A few, as noted by John, found a brief second life after being sold to he C&S.  The unfortunate 5509 when it arrived on the C&S was found to have a crack in its steam dome and was thus unserviceable.  It ended-up being used for parts.  I've always considered the USRA heavy 2-8-2's to be well proportioned and attractive as locomotives go.  While there are many images of the 5500's operating as C&S 800's, views of them operating on Lines West are not so common. I've attached three images. They show the 5503 and 5504 double heading near Gillette, WY; the 5500 at Scotts Bluff, NE; and the 5502 at Galesburg, IL, in 1954 headed to a Chicago area scrap yard. My father was train master at Casper during the early 1950s and mentions in his journals what fine and reliable locomotives the Class O-4's were.  Best Regards - Louis

 To add to Ken's list; The 5500 C&S 804, 5506 to C&S 805, 5507 to C&S 806, 5508 to C&S 807, 5513 to C&S 809. (5509 to C&S never renumbered).
