There is snow on the ground in the photo, so it cannot be from June. I received correspondence from Bill Schultz off list who surmises that the photo is from mid-December 1935. Here are his thoughts:

"The "horse blanket" employee timetable in the engineer's right hand has the numeral "5" clearly visible, and St. Joseph Division employee timetables with "5" in their number (during the era that the 9900 was running Lincoln-Omaha-Kansas City) included No. 45 effective 6/2/35 (remaining in effect through 3/29/36), 50 (1/9/38-6/4/38), 51 (6/5/38-9/24/38), and 52 (9/25/38-6/9/39).  No. 53 was the first "small" ETT.

 

Given the wintry weather, nearly-immaculate pilot of the 9900, and the green "flag" visible on the right side of the cab (left in the photo), I'd conclude this is mid-December 1935, with No. 20 carrying green for the second-section required to handle holiday-volume head-end business."
