Doug, it has been a long time since I have seen them, but I believe most railroad deeds were General Deeds. If I recall correctly, the deed for the land by the gypsum plant switch was a Warranty Deed. The abandonment of the BCR&N turned out to be a mess because one group wanted the Hoover Trail and some of the landowners wanted the ROW back. There are places where the trail is in pieces. I had a friend that went to a meeting in Chariton many years ago when the branch to Humeston was going to be abandoned. Once again, one group wanted a trail and adjoining landowners wanted the ROW. From what my friend told me, he stood up and reminded the landowners that the ROW was never a part of their farms. The further west you go, things change and it is a trail. Very few people also know that the Burlington and Missouri River was surveyed from Ottumwa to Chariton by the grandfather of Dr. James Van Allen, America's premier space scientist.
