Charlie,
I spent 10 minutes with this and my skill set and 20 minutes crafting
this post so as not to make anyone mad. I tried 10 or so different
tricks to squeeze more data starting from the original ebay image.
This is the best I can get for the time I'm willing to chase ghosts.
And I am out of Photoshop tricks. The bag is empty.
I see #275 on the dome.
The small dome does not have 3 safety valves. What is seen are the
image defects and reflections of light. Check the domes and engine for
reflective angles. The light appears to be behind and to the left
throughout the image.
Maybe someone can date the headlight design. Or how long hand hewn
ties were installed. The 1899 Princeton constructions shots show the
new roadbed with rough sawn ties.
Lastly, and with all due respect, I've worked the main rod angle in
both instances of driver configuration vs. rail head height
(baseline). The only wheels we can definitely see are the pony trucks.
using that diameter and geometry to derive a theoretical rail head
height, the main rod intersects far enough back as to 'theoretically'
determine the engine to be a 4-2-0. Is it? I don't know anymore than
the man-in-the-moon. Doubtful, since we do know #275 was a 4-4-0.
That's no longer a theory.
A roster that shows a first #275 prior to 1880 needs to be located.
We don't positively know this is a tintype for that matter. If it is,
it's a poor example and not worth $250 to me.
Maybe something new will change the results.
Randy
