And the conversion was long and slow as many elevators were still using 40 foot box cars into the 70s. An interesting waybill for modelers using them would be a box load of grain doors shipped from a grain unloading terminal back to elevators. 

As a matter of historical fact when grain cars were in short supply just about anything available was used. The elevator at Chana,IL and elsewhere loaded open top hoppers using tarps in the late 70s.

That's correct; boxcars with wooden -- and later, cardboard -- grain doors nailed in place were used to haul grain well into the 1960s, when covered hoppers finally supplanted them.

How would grain have been hauled in 1920? Would it have been in boxcars with boarded up doors?
