I queried this note about the National dump cars with Hol as it also appears in Bulletin 25. We concurred that there is no record of any National dump cars being built for the Burlington in 1914, so the date is wrong at the very least.
(Quoting from our correspondence) Working backwards from 1914, there were 50 Kilbourne & Jacobs (truss rod, 29’ 5”) 100 cars built at Aurora in 1907 (truss rod 33’ 7”), then the Ingoldsby ones in 1905 (truss rod 42’ 6”, but I think they lasted until at least 1939) and before that is a bit of a mystery. I realise that truss rods could be used with steel underframes or sills. However, none of these appear to be a suitable candidate to provide steel underframes for the SM-18’s, any underframes would require welding or cutting for the 36’ 4” stock cars,. It’s a pity that company service equipment wasn’t fully recorded in ORER’s – research would be much easier.
If anyone can throw some new light on possible National dump cars, we’d be very grateful.

A while back Rupert and others were discussing CB&Q Steel frame stock cars.
I was looking for something else and came across an Ownership, Age & Condition document from the CB&Q that states in part:
Nos. Blt. # Condition
55950-57449 1926-28 1262 Fair In building these cars steel center sills from old National dump cars built in 1914 were used.
Series 58000-58999 built in 1924 and 59000-59499 built in 1922 do not have this notation and were presumably built with new center sills.
