Yes it was somewhat routine to operate with only one marker light. They sometimes would literally bounce off the hangers and also disappear for other reasons. Especially after the paddles started replacing markers.

My consolidated code is in a box,so allow me a little slack on this,but I believe the verbage was something like" in the absence of two lights one will be considered the same as two,or something to that effect.

To add one more interesting observation, in the later 1960's (pre-BN) on the Chicago to Aurora section I saw DZ go out of Union Station in four (4) sections at Christmas time.  Yes, they had the class lites on.  Interestingly, the Q ran out of marker lamps and for all the following sections they used only "one" marker light, on the fireman's side.  Was this common?
