Between purchasing the articulated Zephyr sets, and the later
Vista-Dome Zephyr trains, the 'Q' purchased 30 (or so) pre-war, stand-
alone Budd cars. They consisted of Baggage, Baggage/RPO, Chair Cars,
Diners & Diner/Lounge/Observation cars. Most of these cars eventually
ended up as 'Zephyr Pool' cars and were used in secondary trains and
to supplement the consists of 'signature' trains as needs arose.
There were subtle differences among these cars and my modeling
interests have changed from running 'pure' Zephyrs to modeling the
secondary trains and the Zephyrs during the 60's when the pre-war
Budd cars were used more freely in the TCZ, KCZ, Blackhawk and other
overnight trains. The General Pershing Zephyr's Silver Leaf was a 70-
seat chair car measuring 88' 8" over the couplers and was a one-of-a-
kind chair car. All the other pre-war Budd chair cars seem to be 79'
8". Some of the cars were delivered with external window frames,
while others were delivered with rubber gaskets around the windows.
Some cars had brake cylinders mounted on the trucks facing the center
of the car with the lower sills were 'notched' to make swing
clearance and access easier and others had more common brake
cylinders mounted on the truck sideframes. Since the articulated
Zephyrs have (and soon the DZ) have been covered, I would like to see
a 'Burlington Bulletin' (or part of one) dedicated to these pre-war
Budd cars- since, for modeling & history purposes, I think they are
a fascinating part of the 'Q's' passenger history and covering the
how's and why's of cars, such as the almost 90' Silver Leaf chair car
vs the 79' 8" chair cars and the almost 90' Diner/Lounge/Observtaion
cars, would make a good read.
