Hol and Group - Adding to the "not so really old" collection of Q
steam locomotive photographs being posted, here's another wonderful image that
has to be over a hundred years old. It was recently offered for sale on
EBay and shows CB&Q Class S-1 No. 2829 (I've both inserted and
attached):
The image is unidentified as to date and location. However, 2829 looks to
be relatively "new." The 4-6-2 was built by Baldwin in 1906. It was
modernized when rebuilt into a Class S-1-A in 1927. The locomotive had a
long service life not being sold for scrap until January 1951, some 45 years
after being constructed.
I have a preference for old locomotive images like this showing the
engineer or crew posing alongside. The engineer appears to be an 'old head" and
may've started his career firing wood burning 4-4-0s, or at least seeing
them steam by as a child. The S-1 locomotives were the finest in Q passenger
power when built. Best Regards - Louis
