I'd like to get the readers involved, much like I do with the audience in my
presentations at the BRHS meets. By the way this Sept we are going to delve
into 69/64 in depth, this job handled the Quad cities business to Chicago.
Ok,let's go, and the story is on part of the route of 69/64.
So were cruising along around the horn on a extra something east or 2nd,3
rd,4th 192, etc. Were going around the horn eastbound from Savanna because the
DS and everyone knows full well,if we go up Burke we'll stall, double the hill
and tie up the C&I for the balance of the day as we plod along.
So we're routed on the scenic route around the horn via Denrock and Mendota.
"Please call us when when you get close to Mendota and good luck".
As were crawling up Ohio, Lew says when we stall just drop off and we'll let
the train roll back. When we stop, make the cut and ride up to Ohio.
So we stall and I get off the waycar. Soon the train is rolling west downhill.
It stops with the slack bunched as Lew has set the air from the Waycar. I close
the the angle cock on the head end. Dynamite the rear end. Pretty soon the
head end pushes against the rear end and I pull the pin. The head end pulls
away and I catch the rear car. At Ohio we stop momentarily as my partner lines
us on the siding. I ride up to the road crossing and the switch . Line it back
for the main and soon enough the units make their way back to me. We ride back
down the hill to get the second half.
We couple on,pump off the brakes, and pull, nothing happens. Goon belly shoves
against the cars for slack and tries again with the sanders wide open along
with the throttle. We just spin the loco wheels.
OK all you readers what do we do next ?
