Ray:
Welome to the Q in 3-rail O-gauge. There certainly are lots of models out
there at this time. When I started in 1995, prototypical Q offerings in
O-gauge were relatively few & far between. Over the last 2 decades, lots of Q
models have been commercially produced.
I do not have a layout, so I have not invested in either the TMCC or DCS
control system. By the time I ever finish my basement & build a layout, the
TMCC & DCS systems will probably be in versions 13.1 & 17.3 and may be
incompatibe with my current TMCC & DCS locos ! For now, I use my Z-4000
transformer with the Z-4000 hand held control on the rare occasions that I
actually set up my trains on Carpet Central.
I also do not do much modeling on my own, but buy pre-made models. I am also
not a rivet counter. I prefer prototypical paint schemes for locomotives that
the Q actually owned, but am also at times okay with reasonable extrapolations
of a prototypical paint scheme onto a locomitive type that the Q never actually
owned (example is an EMD E7 Zephyr scheme on an EMD E6). (For Q fans in
O-gauge, you either cut the manufactureres some slack or you have a very slim
roster of choices !). I am much more open to extrapolations on freight
equipment.
For Zephyr cars, I really love the Lionel, MTH, & K-Line plated aluminum cars
because they shimmer & shine like stainless steel. Lionel has made the 15"
(60' scale) CZ cars for D&RGW, WP, and CB&Q and K-Line has done them in CZ
(mixed roads) in both 15" & 21" (full 85' scale). MTH did CB&Q CZ cars in 18"
(70'scale) and also in 15" (60'scale) with non-prototypical lettering. I do
not like te look of Lionel's & MTH's plastic streamliner cars because they look
like they are based on Pullman rather than Budd prototypes. Although Atlas-O's
plastic 21" (85') CZ cars look fantastic, I have not aquired any of them
because they are too long for my eventual layout.
Q O-gaugers could sure use a good #4960 or #4978 Mikado, but none have been
offered that I am aware of. Lionel & MTH have both produced Q 0-8-0 steamers
and Atlas-O made 0-6-0 steamers a few years back. 3rd Rail has made Q
4-6-4,4-8-4, & 2-10-4 steamers.
Steve has displayed many of his wonderful 2-rail models at past BRHS meets.
