Bill et all...I've always thought that.  Sometimes technology "gets in the way" and the "cure becomes worse than the disease" ie...There are certainly times when the ground man is out of sight of the engineer and it became necessary to have two or three guys..."get on top"...heaven forbid today ....to pass signs and that's where the radio comes in mighty handy, but for just ordinary switching moves as you mentioned why add another dimension to the work by having to "work the radio"

Pete,

Hand signals aren't dead in the RR industry, today. My son, a U.P. engineer, and I were discussing the subject a few days ago. He says they still prefer hand signals whenever it is possible while switching because it is easier than keying a mike on the radio with every action. In his opinion, you can concentrate better on what you are doing when you are not also operating the radio.

John

Ain't we glad we had all that fun back in the day...Comes in handy now and then.

On a few occasions I would be "helping" my wife to park the car or move it...I would be giving "hand signs"....Llike.."come to me" or "go away from me"....Leo and us ot her trainmen know what those look like...She never figured it out and it caused me more trouble than it was worth.

Pete
