In 2008 we did a trip from Chicago via St Louis and other places to the far SW reaches of Colorado (Mesa Verde state Park)  and came back along the CB&Q main line from Fort Morgan to Chicago via Buda.

We actually stayed in Durango (walking distance to the station) and took a jeep trip up to Silverton and came back via the railway.  This was a joint ticket ( 1 booking) .  This way we saw a little more of the Countryside and did not repeat the rail journey.  We had enough time to walk round Silverton.

If you intend to go to the Mesa Verde National park to see the cliff dwellings, I would recommend staying inside the Park, there was only 1 hotel..  It makes the logistics of getting to the further cave dwelling a lot easier.

I'm planning a trip to Colorado in late Sept and have always wanted to ride one of the narrow gauge lines. Does anyone have suggestions as to which of the 2, either the Durango or the Cumbres, has the best scenery and the best for photographing? Recommendations for hotels at these sites would be helpful as well.

Any other near by RR sites to see? Planning on going up to Denver and will defiantly include the Colorado RR museum. Last time I was there was in 1968.
