Electric train staff was in use between Block 107 (between Hagener and Arenzville) and Concord from about 1912 to 1929, and the block instrument at Block 107 was equipped with a pusher staff attachment in addition to the regular staff machine. The pusher staff was a separate staff from the ones used between Block 107 and Concord in regular service and could only be replaced in the pusher staff case at Block 107. Whenever pushers would help a train into the block between Block 107 and Concord, its engineman would obtain the pusher staff from the operator at Block 107. After cutting off from the train, and until the pusher returned to Block 107, possession of the pusher staff would hold the block as long as it was out of the pusher staff case, just like a regular staff would, until turned in at Block 107 by the engineman of the pusher, immediately upon his return there, so as the release the block promptly.
