Ostriches?
In the preface of the CB&Q "Rules and Instructions for Agents" is the
statement: "The purpose of this book of rules and instructions is to provide
station and other employees handling freight and passenger traffic with (1)
detailed instructions with respect to routine procedures and specific problems
likely to recur frequently enough to warrant such coverage, (2) general
instructions with respect to the handling, reporting and accounting for all
traffic in sufficient detail to furnish the reader with an understanding of
this phase of the railroad business. It is not the purpose of these rules to
cover unusual or isolated matters which must be handled in accordance with
special instructions"
Then Rule 364 in pertinent part states:"Agents must issue live stock contracts
in duplicate for all shipments of live stock, live wild animals or ostriches,
in carloads or less (or emigrants' movables in which live stock is included),
and must not issue any other form of receipt or bill of lading."
Further, Rule 365 states in pertinent part states: "Decline to receive
livestock, live wild animals or ostriches consigned 'to order of' or 'notify'
any firm or individual".
>From the above, one could logically conclude that ostriches were routinely
>shipped on the CB&Q, yet I have never found an agent that shipped one!
This might make a good article for the "Bulletin" or "Zephyr".
