Then there was the elevation from Union Ave to Cicero in about the same time as
the elevation at Aurora. Once this was done there was a plan and a very nice
book put out on the elevation from Cicero to Naperville complete with photos
and
drawings of the depots and it was hoped to electrify to eliminate the problem
with SMOKE. However between the city fathers of all the towns now wanting the
Great Wall of the Burlington built thru their towns and the depression no
elevation. Where was CREATE when they needed it. It also stopped the other
two
tracks being built thru Aurora.

Subject: Re: [CBQ] Triple track
Rupert-
I dug around and found paper copies of the track alighnment diagrams. I
assume
you are talking about the Chicago-Aurora mainlines as the West Chicago branch
wasn't even double tracked.....
The diagrams seem to be difficult to decipher..... It states the first and
second tracks were built from MP 0.85 (or Halsted Street) to MP 10.5 in 1862.
The third track was built in 1889 Halsted Street to MP 6.50 and in 1887 MP 6.50
to Belmont and the fourth track in 1893 Halsted St. to MP 6.94.
It also shows the first and second tracks built 1872 MP 10.5 to MP 37.8 with
the
third track in 1914 Belmont to Aurora.
This has to be incorrect for the second track as the line was completed to
Aurora in 1864. I have seen a track arrangement of the first Riverside
Station
and it was double track
with the first Riverside Station in between the mains merging to a single track
across the Des Plaines River and beyond to the west.
If anyone has more information for Rupert I would be glad to see it as well.
Are any pre-1900 track alignment charts in existence? I am interested in the
original grade from Congress Park to La Grange before the elevation to go over
the IHB.
There is no reference to the date of adding or removing the fourth track which
ran Aurora-Downers Grove on my copies of the diagrams.
By way of reference, here are MP points for Stations from an Employee TT:
01.72 Halsted Street
03.72 Western Avenue
06.88 Cicero
08.47 Clyde
09.03 La Verne
09.57 Berwyn
10.05 Harlem Avenue
11.01 Riverside
11.74 Hollywood
12.27 Brookfield
13.02 Congress Park
13.75 La Grange
14.14 Stone Avenue
15.38 Western Springs
16.30 Highlands
16.83 Hinsdale
17.76 West Hinsdale
18.24 Claredon Hills
19.40 Westmont
20.30 Fairview Avenue
21.12 Downers Grove
22.56 Belmont
24.40 Lisle
28.44 Naperville
33.42 Eola
35.27 West Eola
37.76 Aurora

Can someone advise me as to when the third track was added to the west Chicago
tracks? (I feel that I should know this but can't find the reference!)
Thanks
