I'll bet nobody, or maybe just a few "old coots" know what Ted means when re
refers to "Ditto Flyers....they smelled so good".
The "jelly" used in the "ditto" process had a very unique and special
odor...Kind of sweet and very pleasant...I can't describe it, but I would
recognize it instantly..

Subject: [CBQ] CB&Q Trip February 19, 1966 - St. Louis to Hannibal Behind 4960
Way back, three Wesleyan students rode what was billed as the Last Steam
Excursion Via the CB&Q out of St. Louis Union Station. The date was February
19, 1966. Handing out ditto fliers (they smelled so good) and getting $.50
dues, they recruited 110 others on the trip to fight to save CB&Qs steam, with
their ultimate effort what became the Monticello Railway Museum. I don't
remember much of the rest of the trip, but the early action was spectacular on
a nearly windless, grey day that allowed the 4960's plume to rise majestically
perhap 400 feet, with hundreds of people on the top of the levee in a
strictly-enforced photo run-by line getting a thousand shots and movies (there
were 800 people on the train at least).
The museum needs a slide or photo of that event to use in its PowerP show
history being put together.
If anyone can find something they could use, it will be to great thanks.
Ted Lemen
