Interesting 'find'. Dubuque had but 2 different waycars assigned from 1950 on,
both standard 4 window 30' wood. So 'waycar' in this context would NOT be one
of the 6 side-door waycars created by Q in "59 (also too late) or the earlier
CW versions. Thus I'd guess 'waycar' meant LCL dropping frt 'along the way' as
there were boxcars in such service. As to what potentially went from Dbq to
Prairie: At the time Milw still connected going N up to Marquette and crossing
into Prairie via their pontoon bridge so would not have been J.D. industrial
tractors, meat from Dbq Pack or millwork from Caradco & Farley/Loetsher which
they served. IC & CGW did not go that way at all so Q would have been left
with the following on their mile or so of track in Dbq: plumbing fixtures from
Adams Co., parts from Dbq Bridge & Boiler Works and a team track (Dbq Star
Brewery on the Q track no longer shipping via rail at that time). Prairie at
the time had a cannery on the Q (N side of town), Hiram Walker cooperage
business (S side), boat repair and the Campion Academy (coal for power) and a
large fur trading business. I'd guess generic items from other businesses in
Dbq not served by the Milw, are went to Prairie in an LCL car. Dbq (long known
as the "Key City") was & is a center for distribution in the tri-state area
whether it be clothing, cigars or hardware

Subject: Re: [CBQ] LCL
Hi Bill,
Thanks for posting those files. They are very helpful, as I am
modeling the Dubuque CBQ freight house. In the 1953 listing Dubuque
loaded a car for Prairie du Chein and it is listed as a "way
car". Would this be a car carried by the way freight and dropped off
LCL at each town between Dubuque and PDC?
It is interesting in 1953 a car traveled from Dubuque to Galena, only
about 15 miles.
Anyone know anything about meat reefers operating as LCL cars on
designated routes and schedules delivering meat?
Thanks for all the help.
