The "Mystery Box" is definitely the Automatic Cab Signal box (disconnected by
the time of the photo in 1969; no ACS induction bar behind end plate and below
the steps). Due to the short hood area containing the Vapor Clarkson steam
generator (deactivated) and "dry hopper", there wasn't any room to mount the
ACS box other than on top of the battery box when originally installed. Being
the post "Menk the Fink" era on the "Q", it was probably "engrained" in
Mechanical Dept. hierarchy that it would not be "cost effective" to waste shop
time to remove it; leave that for the upcoming "new Company, BN" to remove it
when repainted.
