Hi Gang, Could it possibly be the box for the control of the cab signaling system the "Q" used in the Chicago-Aurora raceway? The Northerns (5632 etc) had them too...see: http://transport.castlegraphics.com/displayimage.php?album=49&pos=26 (or go to Castle Graphics if the link didn't post) Although I do not know why at the late date of the photo (1969) the railroad would have had to install an external housing. I would think that there would have been plenty of room somewhere under one of the hoods (possibly the short one) for the needed cab signaling equipment.
