Air connections would have been needed anyway on the rear for switching.  Even 
the Silver Flash and Silver Streak, DZ version 1 observation cars, had both 
hoses at the end after they added the coupler.

why they carried the tail hose attached to the train line air when the

"Silver Tower," "Silver Veranda," etc., had air brake controls."
