The welded Blomberg truck under the 9908 for the General Pershing Zephyr has
not, AFAIK, been "officially" identified or confirmed as being a prototype of
the cast version that was used under the EA and E1 units.... but since there
wasn't a need for saving weight on the Silver Charger, I am not sure why it
would have been specially built for the unit.
Here is what I've found about the timing....
511 512 EMC 5/35
511 Leased to CB&Q, painted silver EMC 9/36
511 Returned to EMC 5/37?
512 Leased to ATSF, painted Twins EMC 6/36
512 Returned to EMC, painted silver 1/38
EA CB&Q 9904 9905 EMC 11/36
EA CB&Q 9906A 9907A EMC 10/36
EB CB&Q 9907A 9907B EMC 10/36
EA B&O 51 - 56 EMC 3/37 - 6/38
EB B&O 51X- 56X EMC 3/37 - 6/38
NW4 MP 4102 4103 EMC 8/38
CB&Q 9908 EMC 4/39
FTA/FTB EMC 11/39 - 11/45
Looking at the Bulletin on Shovelnoses did not uncover the date the 511 was
returned to EMC, but it is likely when the Aelous was put into service as the
unit would not be needed for protection power at that point. The Bulletin shows
the 511 on one of its last runs on the CB&Q the TCZ at Minneapolis on May 4,
1937.
Interestingly, that issue has the same photo that started this whole
discussion, and points out the EA in the picture is one of the Denver Zephyr
units... you can see the train name faintly on the nose if you look for it....
and the 511 is pulling one of the DZ sets running as the TCZ.... and the
shovelnose is on a second section of the TCZ according to the Bulletin. Note
that puts the date sometime in October, 1936.
So it looks like the 511 and 512 could NOT have been used to test the Blomberg
AIA truck... the units were still in service when the first EAs were delivered.
The mystery of the welded AIA Blomberg truck continues......
I will buy that the B truck used under the FT might have been considered a
safe variation of the proven A1A version that had been in service for almost 3
years...
