Bill-

I think you have it.... the paint on the unit is fresh and the idea is
plausible.

Does anyone know if the 511 and 512 were used as test beds before they were
used to make switchers for the MP? It seems to me highly unlikely that EMC
went right into produciton with the Blomberg truck. We know that the CB&Q got
the prototype welded A1A truck (under the 9908 Silver Charger) but how was the
truck tested before being made in cast versions for the EA units? For that
matter, was there a comparable B truck before the FTs were produced? I've
tried to get in touch with Preston Cook, who has done the excellent articles in
Railfan, but apparently Carstens doesn't check emails sent through their
website.

  Charlie,

While your theory is plausible, I question moving or staging the
second unit on the through running track to change locomotives. It
would seem that the normal move would be to set the shovel nose unit
over on one of the station tracks to the right rather than foul the
freight main. I agree that the shovel nose may not be on a train as I
believe both the TCZ and the DZ had scheduled stops at Aurora. I
don't recall if or where a switch to the freight main was west of the
depot. It had to be quite a ways west, if it existed.

There is another possibility. It may have been a "staged" photo op
for either the RR, the press or possibly for EMD. The lighting is
obviously better from the south side of the tracks, so if the #511 is
the focal point, then placing the shovel nose unit behind would make
sense. My guess is that there is a significant event occurring. Maybe
it was the first trip with the EMD test unit painted silver.
Obviously, the crewmen are interested. I know that I have seen photos
of the 511 and 512 operating on the Q in their original black paint
scheme, so it is not the first run of the units.
