Steve, If you're referring to the 793 it has been retired for about 4 years
now. Needless to say, they didn't rebuild it. Was like a Frankenstein
cab/coach. The 802 or 806 I think is the last non blanked Q cab car at the
moment aside from the few RI cabs and I think there is still one ex Milwaukee
cab running around on line. At least the cab compartment is still intact on
the blanked cars just sealed off.
About the new cab cars: An engineer friend of mine Jon Szychlinski (RIP Jon)
and I were "experimenting" one day with a new cab car and to our surprise found
out if you cut the brakes out (on the control stand) with the automatic
released, it cuts out both the automatic and independent. So basically we had
a train with no brakes applied and no control from the control stand. The old
cabs had a separate valve for the independent (parking brake) so at least that
would be available even if the automatic was cut out (much to the chagrin of
anyone who forgot to make sure it was released before heading to the west end
and not realizing it until about Brookfield when the passengers in back start
complaining of a "smell".).
I asked once about the Bombardier coaches and why Metra didn't order any and
was told that they would be too heavy with the Stainless Steel fluting. ha!
And last but not least, I think we all are going to miss Sam John Henry in the
afternoons. Thanks Steve for being one of the few dispatchers that actually
answers when we call.
Jeff
