I total agree that it is a good idea and good article. May
other societies have started this and it seem to work well and also keeps us
motivated in our research and modeling projects. Along with creating a
group of friends that has the same interest you have in your area of the
country.

Ray-
Might I suggest that this sort of experience might be worthwhile putting
into the Zephyr?
Your email posting is about 80% of what would be needed for a short article.
One of the things that would help pump some engergy into the Scoiety
would be to get some local groups meeting on a more frequent basis tnan the
two meets a year, which many people can't make because of distance.
Comraderie and Peer Pressure are great ways for both individuals and the
Society in general to grow and prosper. I belong to an N Scale Round Robin
operating group that meets on a very regular basis and not only do the
meetings provide inspiratiion for modeling and research projects, but
knowing the gang will be getting together in a few days forces one to
actually DO something. Our group has been the incubator for magazine
articles, new module standards, modeling projects, and even some commercial
products.
There is nothing inherent in the CB&Q or the BRHS that would prevent "local
chapters" from developing out of such informal get-togethers.... this is one
of the strengths of the PRRH&TS. It sure would make finding places for
meetings easier if many of them already had an active group of members that
know each other and are energized.

Jan,
Several years ago, Bill Glick (San Jose CA) asked me to help him put on an
"EVERYWHERE WEST" gathering at his home for a handful of local Q members. As
I remember it, there were about 10 to 13 attendees. We all brought models
and several individuals brought memorabilia.
Bill hosted the meeting on a Sat, we went out for lunch as a group,
exchanged many ideas about how to build or modify various models to
represent Q equipment, learned more information about lanterns, china and
other Q memorabilia. Told lots of stories. We all had a great time and
agreed to try to meet at least once a year. Some of the attendees are names
we all know: Ken Martin, Al Holck, and others that I have forgotten.
The following year, Bill arranged for a meeting at a local club layout (HO)
so we brought our equipment to run on the layout.
As time went on, we moved to location to other homes, I hosted 2 meeting and
Al Holck hosted a couple. But Bill was the key member behind us getting
together. At one time, we even had someone from Portland Or come down for
the day.
At first, we were very good at making the meeting once a year. But then over
time, we skipped a year here and there. The last time we got together was at
my home about 3 or 4 years ago and had about 14 to 16 members show up.
I encourage you to host a meeting, and more importantly, I like the idea of
inviting GN and NP locals as well. We never thought of that, and I know it
could lead to more exchanges that might open up more opportunities for all
of you.
Several years ago, I made contact with one of the owners of Silver Solarium,
which was located between San Jose and Sacramento. He said that if we have a
meeting, he would open the car to us. We have not yet followed thought on
his offer. So, I guess Bill and I should start planning on an "EVERYWHERE
WEST" meeting sometime this summer.
