It took CP 3 days of out of service time to replace the swing span on the
Black River here in La Crosse. To do that in the 2 prior years they had
built the piers an replaced sections of the approach (also with track
windows - some 12 hours long). On removal day as soon as the last train
cleared they started cutting and removing the span. It took long into the
night before the turntable pier was demoed (3 am). It then took the
remaining 2 days to move the pre-constructed lift span and remaining
approach sections in place, fill the counterweights with concrete and iron
concentrate and get the deck track in place.

hi;i would bet they will place two barges under it and jack it up and
float it out, demo the center swing pier, drill the charge holes before
floating the swing span, after swing span is floated away, set charges and
blast, and float in new lift span, ready to go in 12 to 16 hours, ken

When the P&PU bascule bridge in Peoria was replaced in the early 80's
they basically built the new bridge around the old except for the lift
span, which was built on land. On the day of reckoning the old lift
span was demolished using explosives, and then the new lift span was
barged into place and connected between the two new towers. The
bridge was out of service for less than ten hours. I have to assume
about the same thing will happen this time around, the only trick
being what will they do with the center swing pier.
