When the P&PU bascule bridge in Peoria was replaced in the early 80's they basically built the new bridge around the old except for the lift span, which was built on land. On the day of reckoning the old lift span was demolished using explosives, and then the new lift span was barged into place and connected between the two new towers. The bridge was out of service for less than ten hours. I have to assume about the same thing will happen this time around, the only trick being what will they do with the center swing pier.
