Paul,
My first stop would be a walk through Chicago's Union Station and then a short
drive south on Lake Shore Drive to the Museum of Science and Industry to see
the Pioneer Zephyr in its magnificently restored condition. Lots of CB&Q
regalia around the exhibit and it's all free once you pay the normal admission.
Don't forget the new HO model rail road up the stairs. I'd then go to the
Zephyr Pits ( now Metra ) and dream of what used to be there. A little south
and see the St Charles Airline before it's ripped from our sights. Then motor
over to Clyde Yards to view the former Q Diesel shops. I'm also partial to most
of the commuter stops for railfanning like Berwyn, Highlands, LaGrange, Stone
Avenue, Hinsdale and Downers Grove. Highlands is still my favorite with the
single lane highway bridge you can shoot from.
Actually you can still find some remains of the Q's heritage all along the
right of way if you look hard enough.
Burlington Iowa, East Dubuque, Debuque, Quincy, Hannibal, Kewaunee, Earlville,
towns along the entire Twin Cities Route and of course Galesburg are great
towns to explore. Some of the towns have at least one hobby shop displaying
CB&Q or BN models from the local modelers.
I like to bring along one of the Mike Spoor or Al Holck books and use the map
or photos of the site to help identify the remains.

When all else fails and you find that that depot is now a pile of limestone
shoot the grain elevators and the main street .

Sincerely,
Rob Manley

  Dear All

My wife and I are hoping to get across the pond this summer (last years
trip had to be postponed) and will be picking up a car in Chicago.

What are the "must" visits CBQ sites along the route from Chicago -
  Denver.

I am basically modelling Buda. Is there a depot that I can see that is
similar to that which was at Buda.

  Thank you in anticipation.
