Re DZ:

Prior to September 7, 1968, the only time I saw the DZ observation cars with
anything coupled behind was from Burlington to Chicago, where a coach was
added. This practice ended when the train was rearranged in the Spring of 1967
after the Colorado Springs connection was bustituted on January 1, 1967.

On September 7, 1968, train 1 leaving Chicago (with me on it) had the Obs
sandwiched behind the diner for the first time. The Chuckwagon car, Silver
Kettle, had been replaced with a dinette coach, the Silver Chair, which had
just been converted from a parlor car; in fact the car still smelled of fresh
paint. Several PRR sleepers chartered by Four Winds Tours brought up the rear
of the train.

On the DZ's I rode in the summer of 1967, reversed observation cars were used
at the front of the train as lounge cars. On the #10 that I rode, the car was
the St. Nicholas Mountain, immediately followed by an Empire Builder dome with
dome seats reversed. On #1 later that summer, the obs was the CZ's 1952-built
Silver Lookout.

  Duncan and Tom-
The heavyweight diner-lounge might not have been turned...depends on the era
as most often diners were run with the kitchen end forward...
The TCZ often ran with an observation car on both ends....either one of the
diner-lounge-observations or sometimes the Q's NCL car in silver.
Also remember seeing square end dome obvs cars (DZ, KCZ) and GN Mountain
series cars used the same way.
This would be later in the 60's as things didn't go to hell until after 1965
or thereabouts IIRC....
