Mark,
50' cars were the ones loaded with hides. Usually just stacked
in the car with a lot of salt between layers. When physically
checking cars would make a note of which cars had the doorway
floor area filled with salt or corrosion stains along the side
sills.
40' cars were used for other stuff like blood meal and tankage
although they could also be used for hides. Usually the roof
hatch cars were 40'.
Got some June, 1959 lists on my desk and did a quick search.

CB&Q 11364 Hides
CB&Q 10070 Hides
CB&Q 10615 Hides
CB&Q 7444 Hides
Obviously in wrong era, search halted. Just a few from mid-sixties
within reach.
CB&Q 28184 a hide loading car.
CB&Q 21372 going to NP as empty? Can not think of why unless it's hides.
CB&Q 22726 a hide loading car.
CB&Q 30119 a hide loading car.
Working from the empty side is not very productive. Any box car used
for meat by-products was generically a "hide car" so would rather work
from the loaded side.
Will add that to the work process and start building a list, already
keeping track of trailer flat conversions.

Subject: [CBQ] Special equipment for cars in hide service
Hello everyone,
I've been collecting information on some 50ft boxcars in hide service
that I'm planning to model using Proto 2000 kits. The cars in
question are:
CBQ 21154, 21235, 21378, 22371 (50ft AAR single door boxcar)
CBQ 48506, 48593 (50ft AAR double door boxcar with end door)
In the Official Railway Equipment Register these cars are listed as
type XP, specially equiped to handle a specific commodity. Would sort
of special equipment would a hide car have? I was under the
impression that hides were either shipped in barrels or crates, or
were just piled loose in the car (the more I think about a car full of
loose hides the more I hope it never happened!).
Thanks,
Mark Heiden
