Yes, that is what the "XP" designation has meant all along.
The word "restricted" is probably a little too strong. What
the Railroad did and what the Customers did was not always as
it was planned in the car service rules.
Have to qualify myself a little here. Depending on what their
Customers wanted some hides would be bundled but they would
still have to be loaded with salt.
The cars that stand out in my mind as looking the worst were
the cars that had been painted "Forest Green". Probably more
rust than salt but they looked and smelled horrible.
Somewhere someone must have taken photos of these things.
I may have and will keep that need in mind.

Hi Russell,
If the hides were loaded loose, I'll bet that an XP designation simply
means it is a car restricted to a specific kind of service. What
would the corrosion stains around the doorways look like? Just rusty,
or would a crust of salt build up along the bottom of the door frame
and the side sill?
