Thanks for the response.
In the 1950s the DRGW appears also to have used
Amber/Amber/Red to the rear.
The C&S trains operated on the Colorado "Joint Line",
in the 1950s, under the ATSF rule book.
I have evidence that, on at least one occasion, a C&S
train operated with ATSF way car bring up the rear
end. And two occasions when an ATSF train had a C&S or
CB&Q (hard to tell as the photo definition is not
great) on the rear (the Burling Route sign is quite
distinct).
Well that has muddied the waters a tad.
Did the C&S/CB&Q come under the definition of "most
RRs"?
